No King But Jesus (for Light Colors)
This was the slogan of the American Revolution. Remember, there had never been a country or any group of people who were not ruled by a King, Emperor or monarch of some sort. The people of the colonies were divided into two major groups. One were the Royalists, who believed we had to have a ruler of some sort, it is just the way civilized men live together. England, after all, had elected bodies of men who made and administered many laws and rules of government. Yet these could be vetoed by the King. So Royalists believed we could elect our leaders and negotiate with the King as well. This group was by far the majority. Then there were those who yearned for Freedom from the chains of Kings and governments who controlled their actions, treating their subjects as they saw fit to keep them subservient. These men believed each individual was created by God and instilled with certain God given rights that no man or government should be able to take away. They believed that with God's help and guidance they could win their freedom from their English King and devise a government under which men could rule themselves. They could have laws to rule the nation, not a ruler of the laws. It took quite awhile to find and decide on a back for this simple yet profound statement which led to this country's very existence. The story I found for the back is true. This confirmation through action is far more powerful than any argument of ideas. Those of you familiar with American History will realize this occurred immediately before a "Shot Heard Round the World" on a green in Lexington. This shot changed the world forever. These men, through the grace of Divine Providence as George Washington so often wrote, did win their freedom and agreed on a Constitution still profoundly different from every other country. Yes, other countries are now ruled by elected governments of men, but individual rights still emanate from the government. In America, our government exists to secure these individual rights which come from God. Many historians say we would not have a nation it it were not for the Great Awakening which swept the colonies in the early 1700s. People came to know the freedom of God through His grace and determined to live under God's law themselves. This Brush Fire of Freedom was kindled and fed by an eternal source. Yes, NO KING BUT JESUS!
